We
are the Shoe Women. We are Charlotte, Courtney, Jami, Jane,
Karolyne, Ramona, and Rashmi. We come from Jamaica, India,
and the United States. We are daughters, sisters and friends.
We are wives, widows and divorcees. We are mothers of children
born, children lost, and children who are not our own. We
have wounded and been wounded. We have done things we’re
proud of, and made mistakes we desire never to repeat. We
have failed and we have succeeded. We are human and divine.
In Our Shoes: Seven Women Reveal Their Soles is a book
and stage presentation written and performed by six women from
Arizona and Idaho. Inspiration for this book came from workshops
Charlotte Brown and Karolyne Rogers co-facilitated based on their
first book,
A Weaving of Wonder. Each chapter of the book captures
one woman's life told in:
- a photograph of a pair of shoes,
decorated with symbols representative of the most significant
people, events, beliefs, and settings of her life
- a fable that expresses the emotions evoked by those symbols
- candid, first person-reflections
on her past, present and future. Each asking herself: to what
degree am I willing to risk exposiing my life to others? What
stories am I afraid to tell? Do I have the courage to tell
them anyway? The answers tell the stories of seven ordinary,
extraordinary women who have seized the opportunity to see
what they're made of.
